Surroundings of Piešťany / Our authors


For a long time Piešťany has been a town which has lured many celebrities with its atmosphere. Some of them were so taken with it that it became their home town, and others gladly return for frequent visits. There are many publications about Piešťany’s Spa, its history, monuments, beautiful landscape and celebrities. Several institutions within the municipality participate in these publications – the Balneological Museum, Piešťany’s Information Centre, the Town library and the non - profit making organization ProPolis… We would like to introduce you to several of today’s celebrities from the town, whose creations extend beyond regional boundaries.


Jozef Babušek

Cartoonist and illustrator resident in Piešťany, a living legend amongst modern cartoonists, Piešťany’s cultural celebrity of 2006. He has drawn 23 extensive adventure comic strips for Slovak and Czech magazines. He became renowned for his absurd comic stories featuring the popular cartoon character Jožinko, which were published under the pseudonym Jozef Schek. On the occasion of his 85th birthday his collected cartoons were re - published in a book.

JOŽINKO  - a child of his parents
The complete series of this legendary cartoon strip was published in the humorous magazine Roháč between 1965 – 1988.Jožinko was able to speak to all generations and became the most popular Slovak cartoon ever. Through humour he voiced the unspoken opinions of the general public. At the same time he offered and still offers the only effective remedy for a troubled soul – laughter.  


Jaroslav "Yaro" M. Kupčo

One of the most distinguished of Slovakia’s photographers, an honorary member of Piešťany’s photo club, and Piešťany’s cultural celebrity in of 2007. He has organized several successful exhibitions, and acquired recognition from respected authorities. He works only with classical apparatus, and he does not use digital devices. He mostly captures scenes of the countryside and his beloved mountains. He has published a selection of his photographs in a book called Journeys and Stops.

JOURNEYS AND STOPS
This book of black and white photographs from all around the world but also from Slovakia is divided into two parts. The first part – "Journeys", captures pictures from the author’s wanderings through Austria, Switzerland, France, Italy and Corsica. The second part of the book – "Stops", shows pictures from Slovakia, especially from Spiš, Orava, Zamagurie and from other towns, which the author holds in high regard. The whole photograph collection hints at an intimate relationship with the countryside, revealed by the images of its picturesque curves, intimate coves, majestic nobility and tranquility. The pictures are accompanied by the words of Austrian author Gregor M. Lepka, translated by Marián Hatala.


Ing. arch. Bohuslav "Bobo" Pernecký

A Piešťany architect and cartoonist, Piešťany’s cultural celebrity of 2000. He is a co - founder of a private architectural studio in Piešťany and an international biennial caricature of architecture called ARCHICATURE. He is the architect responsible for several distinguished town buildings. He was awarded with the Architecture Award CE.ZA.AR in 2006 as a co-designer of the Piešťany pedestrian zone project. He has organized several successful exhibitions and has received domestic and international awards. He has illustrated 25 books; he wrote and drew a concertina book for children "Us from the ZOO". He actively participates in international festivals all over the world. On the occasion of his life’s jubilee he published a collection of his life’s creations under the name Humanology.

HUMANOLOGY
Is a collection of caricatures inspired by the creations of Alfred Brehm, who is dedicated to the analysis of animal lives. The book offers a selection of observations, notes and records of human life - a kind of Natural History of the human - humanology. Caricatures and drawings were enhanced by respected writers such as Dušan Dušek, Kornel Földvári, Daniel Hevier, Tomáš Janovic, Stanislav Štepka, Ján Štrasser and others.


PhDr. Vladimír Krupa

The director of the Balneological Museum in Piešťany, Piešťany’s cultural celebrity of 2002. His interests lie in the history and archaeology of Piešťany and its surrounding areas and with aspects of the history of the museum. He has participated in archaeological research on Piešťany and its surroundings, and in the production of several publications of the Balneological Museum and the almanac "Balneological Informant".


Alexander Urminský

Piešťany philatelist, numismatist and postcard collector, Piešťany’s cultural celebrity of 2004. He is engaged with exhibition and publication work in the expert and non - expert press, including the Internet. His hobbies focus on regional history, the history of mailing and the miller’s trade, which he documents with postcards, mailing documents and other testimonials. He assembled the most interesting postcards from his collection and from the collections of the Balneological Museum into a publication called "Piešťany in the Mirror of Historical Postcards". PhDr. Vladimír Krupa collaborated on the accompanying texts.

PIEŠŤANY IN THE MIRROR OF HISTORICAL POSTCARDS
This Trilingual Slovak - English - German publication presents more than 330 historic views of the most famous Slovak spa. Piešťany is introduced through historical postcards dating from the period between the end of the 19th century up to the first half of the 20th century. The reader can peruse pictures of places which have changed so much that they are not recognizable nowadays, and also of buildings which no longer exist. Each picture is supplemented with a short, but rich text. There is also a note concerning the way postcards act as a communication medium - we are told about the techniques of postcard manufacture, and there are also explanations of some collector’s terms.


Ing. Eva Wernerová

Landscape architect, presently managing the Studio of garden and landscape creation, which deals with the project design and realization of green areas. She is a member of the Chamber of Slovak architects, Association for Landscape and Garden creations and a chairman of the Environment Commission in Piešťany. She was awarded with an Architecture Award CE.ZA.AR in 2008 as a co - author of the Dubová Stream revitalization.

THE TREES OF PIEŠŤANY
The book provides a summary of the significant trees that grow in Piešťany. It mainly consists of big, colourful photographs supplemented with bilingual texts characterizing each specific tree. At the end of the book you can find a key map with images of particular trees. The book became the first of its kind in Slovakia and the non - profit organization ProPolis was awarded with the Mayor’s Prize for Environmentalism in 2008 for it’s publication.


Dušan Dušek

Writer, prosaic, lecturer, finalist of the literature prize Anasoft Litera 2007. He became an honorary citizen of Piešťany in 2008. He spent his childhood in Piešťany, and still likes to return - in person, in his memories and in one instance, in one of his novels called "Cold on hands".

COLD ON HANDS
This book has the subtitle Little romance, which refers not only to it’s size but also the style in which it is written. The main characters of the novel discover contrasts such as cold and chilliness - warmth of human touch in their relationships. The story has several subplots; it is a mosaic of memories, recollections, reflections, notes, impressions and observations. The book is characterized by a poetic, playful and spontaneous view of the world. It is a nostalgic regression into childhood, including memories of first loves, swimming in the Eva swimming pool and walks on the Colonnade Bridge.


Top
