Cycling track Dubová

This cycling track follows the water stream Dubová that flows diagonally through the town from north-west to the water reservoir Sĺňava in the south; it makes up the living thread of the town and region. Although the last decades of the 20th century caused heavy pollution to the waters and damaged the banks and their flora, the first results of the City of Piešťany effort to clean up and return the life there are present already.

The cycling track Dubová allows to the pedestrians, cyclists and skaters to reach one part of the town from another one surrounded by pleasant environment full of trees, water and benches. The part of the cycling track built in the local area Floreát joins the administrative zone, where several bureaus can be found, with gradually built zone for recreational activities and sports in the south part of the town along the Dubová stream; apart of the existing hotels, ice rink and new bowling hall, Paralympic Sports Centre is going to be erected there in the near future. This part of the track is located in the family home residential zone and is 2.3 km long.

The goal for the future is to create natural park along the whole water stream full of playgrounds, benches, banquettes, tables for refreshment, bridges and areas to take the dogs for a stroll.
If this goal is to be fulfilled in the future in its entire magnitude, and the villages around Piešťany are to continue building the tracks, the cycling track along Dubová is going to lead the Piešťany visitors to interesting places of the neighbouring areas. They are interesting from their historical point of view like the ruins of the monastery of the Order of the St. John of Jerusalem, count’s tomb and burial place in Očkov, old mills along the stream, the ruins of the Great Morava seat in the cadastral area of the village of Pobedim, or the Čachtice Castle. Others are interesting from the point of view of the nature like the protected bank vegetation along Dubová, protected area of the oak forest in Bašovce, or the protected historical park in Častkovce.

The architectural form of the revitalised track in its Dubová – Floreát part was awarded CE.ZA.R - the Prize for Architecture, category Exterior. The project authors – Eva Wernerová, Igor Bučenec and Peter Pospiech – were appreciated.
